Ryan Thomas is a welterweight fighter, formerly competing in the UFC but cut from their roster following back to back submission losses to Ben Saunders and Matt Brown. He signed with Bellator, and lost to Ben Askren in the quarterfinals. He received another chance in another quarterfinal match against undefeated Jacob McClintock because a volcano erupted in Europe and disrupted air traffic, forcing Jim Wallhead to pull out just a few days after Thomas lost to Askren, so Thomas took the fight on five day's notice. Thomas defeated McClintock via technical knockout and advanced to the semifinals where he lost a hard-fought but clear-cut decision to Askren.
He made his return to Bellator against Wallhead, coincidentally. He lost a unanimous decision to Wallhead.
Thomas next fought Daniel Head defeating Head via "leg triangle" submission.
He then faced Jonatas Novaes losing via armbar submission near the end of the first round.
Thomas next fought fellow UFC veteran John Kolosci. He defeated Kolosci via impressive first-round reverse triangle choke submission.
He then fought Evilasio Silva Araujo defeating Araujo via first round submission due to punches and then fought fellow UFC veteran Corey Hill defeating Hill via first round armbar submission.
